Are you running out of good stuff to watch on Netflix? Would you like to get out into the open air but that route you’ve been walking for the past 2 years has just got too familiar? Do you feel that there must be something more valuable you could do with your time?
We’d like you to say yes to any of these questions, but even if you say no, we’d like you to read the rest of this article because you could be just the person we’re looking for. You could make a difference in the lives of our young people.

Scout groups could not exist without young people, but equally they could not exist without its adult volunteers. Now, before you go and close this browser tab and return to Facebook, please give me a couple of your valuable minutes.
Our volunteers are from all walks of life: scientists, librarians, engineers, carpenters, teachers, plumbers, childminders, firefighters, shop assistants, and it’s that variety that brings such a rich diversity into our group. You do not have to be Bear Grylls to make a difference to our young people. Just you being you is enough!
We are currently running very light on adult volunteers across all of our sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers). This means we have to rely on parental help every week. While there is nothing wrong with this, it is a far cry from having a full, engaged leadership team in each section.
But we don’t only need leaders and assistants; there is plenty to do behind the scenes. Scouting in Shefford is very popular and as such we have a large and growing waiting list. We are looking for someone to manage this list and coordinate with the sections to get young people off the list and into Scouting. As a charity, we also have an executive committee – staffed by volunteers – who keep the wheels turning and the group running.
These all need adults, like you.
“What’s in it for me?” is a question I don’t hear very often from adults, but nevertheless I’m going to answer it. You will be providing our young people with opportunities and adventures they might not otherwise get. This applies to you too! You can learn how to climb, do archery, light a fire without matches, cook over an open fire, camp, build structures from wood and rope, play games without a wireless controller. You can learn leadership skills, management skills, how to communicate effectively across multiple age ranges and how to motivate people. There is so much to learn as an adult in Scouting. The sky’s the limit!
