Serving Shefford and the surrounding villages, 1st Shefford Scout Group has been giving young people skills, adventure, and support since 1909 and the demand for Scouting is greater than ever made evident by our huge waiting list!
Last year we had to make the difficult decision to leave our Scout hut of many years as the situation was no longer viable or sustainable for us. We’re very fortunate that the Shefford Baptist Church has opened their doors to us and continue to be our home for the time being. We do have ambitions to find a new permanent home, one that can serve the community as well as the specific needs of our group.
Nevertheless, our amazing adult volunteers have adapted and continue to offer their time to the girls and boys in the group. We play in the woods, light fires, cook, learn independent skills and do many many more fun and exciting things.
There are no limits and everyone’s skill levels fits in somewhere and if we can teach the young people, we can teach you. In our group we have a diverse range of amazing people including childminders, plumbers, joiners, IT consultants, engineers, nurses, scientists and teachers.

We volunteer the time we can. For some this means helping around work shifts, others once a month and some every week. Some prefer supporting the young people directly, others prefer to support the group in the background. Volunteering fits around you and what you can and want to offer.
There is a big nationwide push for volunteering at present, but never has our need been greater. Volunteering in Scouting is such a rewarding experience. Not only can you support the young people of Shefford, but you will find yourself gaining new skills, making new friends, dealing with the unexpected and having fun!
